Mila is a youth-led environmental initiative committed to solving one of the world’s biggest challenges, waste management! Based in Mombasa, Kenya, we use the incredible power of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) to transform and educate.
At 23, Nusra Juriah, an aspiring clinician and environmental advocate, was determined to see the potential in her community, despite the stark contrast between what she believed and the stereotypes that surrounded her. In Mombasa, people often dismissed environmental concerns, viewing waste and pollution as inevitable, unsolvable issues, especially in under-resourced areas like her own.
The expectation for young women like her was to focus on marriage or settle into traditional roles. Some even questioned if her passion for environmental work stemmed from personal challenges at home. People couldn’t understand why a young “pretty” woman, who should be “thinking about her future,” was dedicated to making a difference.
